To our players, sponsors, members, supporters and family and friends of the Melville Cricket Club,
The cricket fraternity was rocked recently by the news of the tragic passing of Ben Austin in a terrible pre game accident in Victoria.
It is fair to say the cricket family is very close knit and linked through our love of the game and when there is a tragedy within our cricket community, it impacts us all.
Our thoughts, best wishes and prayers are with Ben’s family, friends and team mates.
This accident was discussed at our Committee meeting on Thurs night and we reflected on what we should do as a Club in response.
In this regard we agreed:
All players from Melville Cricket Club will wear black arm bands as a mark of respect.
We will commence a review of our internal training practices to ensure we are doing everything possible to provide a safe training and playing environment for our players, Coaches and Managers.
Provide support to our players in relation to Ben’s passing.
Await further direction from the governing bodies including Cricket Australia and WA Cricket in relation to mandated and recommended changes to player safety, noting there is a WADCC meeting on Monday night which will discuss the issue.
We would also encourage all parents and players to review their current protective equipment (particularly helmets) to ensure they are compliant with the current standards and also provide the best possible protection for the individual.
The Club will continue to provide updates as and when more information becomes available.
